Age of Champions is the award-winning documentary following five competitors who sprint, leap, and swim for gold at the National Senior Olympics. You’ll meet a 100-year-old tennis champion, 86-year-old pole vaulter, and rough-and-tumble basketball grandmothers as they triumph over the limitations of age. The film is “infectiously inspiring” and festival audiences across the country have fallen in love with its light-hearted take on growing older. It’s a powerful story to share with the whole family and inspire your loved ones to be healthier, happier, and more active.

  My thoughts

Wow! What an inspiring documentary. I aim to be as active and kind hearted as these champions when I reach their age. These athletes really do show that age is just a number!

4. Chasing Perfection

  2 Part Series     Multi-Sport

Chasing Perfection Inspirational Sports Movies

  Blurb

Olympic gold medal-winning sprinter Michael Johnson explores the lives of world-class athletes and the conditions that led to their elite status.

  My thoughts

In the first episode I found it was a really good insight into what technology is available to get that extra 1%. To train more efficiently using technology to determines where improvements can be made. As Michael Johnson said to confirm what you think is right and essentially take the guess work out is what’s great about it. Great for those already in the elite arena as they get access to the technology.

I was able to benefit more from the second episode. It suggested simple ways to improve through mental ability, sleep, focus and recovery. I found that this was really helpful to me as an individual athlete as they were easy to implement. When I get injured, I often find myself in a spiral of negative thoughts. So, learning how to control that “Chimp” so they say is something I can really work on.

5. Creed

  Movie     Boxing

Creed - Inspirational Movies Boxing

  Blurb

Adonis Johnson never knew his famous father, world heavyweight champion Apollo Creed, who died before he was born. Still, there’s no denying that boxing is in his blood; so Adonis heads to Philadelphia, the site of Apollo Creed’s legendary match with a tough upstart named Rocky Balboa. Once in the City of Brotherly Love, Adonis tracks Rocky down and asks him to be his trainer. Despite his insistence that he is out of the fight game for good, Rocky sees in Adonis the strength and determination he had known in Apollo – the fierce rival who became his closet friend. Agreeing to take him on, Rocky trains the young fighter, even as the former champ is battling an opponent more deadly than any he faced in the ring. With Rocky in his corner, it isn’t long before Adonis gets his own shot at the title. But can he develop not only the drive but also the heart of a true fighter in time to get into the ring?

  My thoughts

Just when you thought the Rocky series had come to an end along comes Creed! Rocky sure has been an inspiration to many throughout his boxing sport movies. This film continues that legacy through the inspirational journey of Apollo Creed’s son, Adonis. Although Adonis had money he chose the boxing life. He wanted to create a name for himself without using his father’s name to succeed. Who better to help him do that than Rocky.

  My thoughts

A truly inspirational movie about bringing the community together for a common cause. I think that there is a lot of great unused talent in the world due to circumstances like these. All it takes is one person to believe and provide the opportunity to learn to make a difference. My motto is to think about “how can I” rather than “I can’t”. This film captures this philosophy perfectly. An important addition to my must watch sports movies list.

American Masters - Althea - Inspirational Sports Movies Tennis

  Blurb

Discover the story of Althea Gibson, who emerged as the unlikely queen of the segregated tennis world of the 1950s. She was the first African American to play and win Wimbledon and the U.S. Nationals.

  My thoughts

It’s hard to imagine a world where only ‘white’ people were allowed in some places. Although racism still exists today it is not to that extent. Althea’s story is a demonstration of courage and strength. Her successes and the realism of her times of despair is what I could really resonate with in this documentary.

Inspirational Sports Movies - Basketball Iverson

  Blurb

IVERSON is the story of one of the most electrifying and polarizing athletes of all-time, told largely in the NBA legend’s own words. Allen Iverson rose from a childhood of crushing poverty in Hampton, Virginia to become an 11-time NBA All-Star and universally recognized icon of his sport. Off the court, his audacious rejection of conservative NBA convention and unapologetic embrace of hip hop culture sent shockwaves throughout the league and influenced an entire generation of basketball fans. The tell-all documentary charts the career highs and personal lows of one of the most distinctive and accomplished figures the sport of basketball has ever seen.

  My thoughts

Allen Iverson has been portrayed in the media as a very controversial figure. This documentary really reminded me that there are two sides to every story. Going through the challenges Iverson faced in his childhood and still being able to achieve NBA stardom gives hope to any kid looking to achieve the same. Anything is possible!
